What is Polyvagal Theory?

Ok, most of us have heard of the fight, flight, and freeze response. These all take place in our nervous system when we feel threatened or stressed. Polyvagal Theory confirms that these are indeed normal reactions for our nervous system to have. In fact, we don't have to do much work at all to get stressed out. It just happens naturally. Recovering from stress however, isn't so easy. We must cultivate this capacity through accessing another part of our nervous system called the Social Engagement System. This is the newest, most developed part of our nervous system as mammals, and uses practices in connection and engagement to allow us to regulate our own reactions and function with more enjoyment and well-being.

Polyvagal Theory helps us map out which parts of our nervous system help us to survive and which parts help us to thrive.

Seen in order of our development, we can better understand these 3 states as:

  • Freeze- originated in fish and reptiles, playing dead to survive, decreased breathing and heart rate

  • Fight or Flight- mammals with spinal cords freaking out with over-arousal, anger, running away from stressors

  • Connect and Engage (The Social Engagement System)- mammals creating more stability, enjoyment, and well-being with and for each other, a playful state with a mixture of activation and calmness

By meeting for an ongoing basis over 3 sessions in this workshop series, our nervous systems will have the opportunity to flex, rest, and build our Social Engagement Systems through safe connection and engagement.
